Mission Statement (Ten Thousand Villages' national)
To create opportunities for artisans in developing countries to earn income by bringing their products and stories to our markets through long-term fair trading relationships.
We work directly with tens of thousands of artisans, but their employment benefits their families and communities as well. Many of our artisans give back to the community by forming co-ops which develop projects such as medical centers, child care centers, schools, wells, and sanitation for the villages. 70% of our artisans are women, many of whom are sole wage earners for their families who would not be able to find employment without the artisan groups we work with.
Ten Thousand Villages Mishawaka regularly participates in events and festivals throughout the community; various off-site sales are held at locations such as Notre Dame campus, Art Beat in South Bend, the annual holiday Prince of Peace Alternative Gift Fair in South Bend, and at IU South Bend. We also sponsor fundraisers for groups like Good Shepherd Montessori in South Bend, the Early Childhood Development Center at the University of Notre Dame, Broadway Christian Parish of South Bend, and Hubbard Hill Retirement Community in Elkhart, among others.
We also have a sister store in Goshen on Main Street, also well worth a visit.
